Shamrock Rovers strolled to a comfortable 4-1 victory over Drogheda United at Tallaght Stadium on Friday evening.

Goals from Gary Shaw, Trevor Clarke, James Doona and Aaron Bolger sent Rovers on their way, although Drogheda did briefly get back in the game when Sean Brennan made it 2-1.

All the goals came in the second half, and there were just 19 seconds gone when Shaw opened the scoring, volleying first-time past Stephen McGuinness from Michael O'Connor's knock-down.

Clarke doubled the lead just after the hour when he latched onto substitute Bolger's through ball and hit the ball low and hard between the keeper's legs.

Drogheda struck back with their first chance of the second half as Ryan Masterson found space on the right and crossed for Brennan, who hit the post before slotting home at the second attempt.

The visitors' fightback didn't last long as substitute Doona restored the two-goal cushion from just inside the box before Bolger added the final goal with a cool finish in injury time.
