It's four years to the day since Conan Byrne stunned Tallaght Stadium as he scored all four goals in St Patrick's Athletic's destruction of Shamrock Rovers.

The winger put in one of the all-time great League of Ireland performances as the Saints stayed on course to pip Dundalk to the title that year.

It was a particularly unhappy night for the Hoops, who saw Derek Foran and ex-Saint Sean O'Connor sent off on the night, and they eventually missed out on Europe, finishing fifth.

Byrne opened the scoring with less than five minutes on the clock when he capitalised on a mistake from Foran before lashing the ball home from inside the box.

The Dubliner doubled the lead just before half time, sending Richard Brush the wrong way from the spot after Foran had been dismissed for fouling Anto Flood in the act of shooting.

After O'Connor was dimissed for another denial of a goalscoring opportunity early in the second half, Byrne sealed his hat-trick as he beat substitute goalkeeper Barry Murphy from the spot.

And he got his fourth just after the hour as Barry Murphy denied Flood but could do little about the follow-up from Byrne.
