Waterford have confirmed that manager Alan Reynolds is recovering in hospital after sustaining significant injuries in an unprovoked assault on Saturday night.

The 43-year-old was reportedly set upon from behind by one or two assailants around 1am in Tramore, Co Waterford, and repeatedly punched and kicked.

He is understood to have sustained a suspected broken leg as well as injuries to his face and body, and is currently recovering in hospital.

A club statement read: "Waterford FC can confirm that manager Alan Reynolds is recovering in hospital following an unprovoked assault last night.

“The club will be making no further comment on the matter."

Waterford native Reynolds represented Waterford United, Cork City and Shamrock Rovers among others during a distinguished playing career.

He was on John Caulfield’s coaching staff at Cork City when he was offered the head coach position at Waterford in 2017 and steered the club to the First Division title in his first season.
