18-year-old Irish International Michael Obafemi has opened his Premier League account with Southampton with a close-range strike against fellow relegation candidates Huddersfield Town.

The goal made the Dubliner the Saints’ youngest-ever Premier League, and the youngest Republic of Ireland senior international to score in the league.

Obafemi made his Republic of Ireland debut for the Boys in Green away to Denmark in a rather dour UEFA Nations League spectacle in Aarhus.

Obafemi’s debut for the Boys in Green also proved to be manager Martin O’Neill’s last game in charge of the senior side.

A string of poor results which forced the FAI to take action in the aftermath of the November fixtures against Northern Ireland and Denmark.

Obafemi, 18, has enjoyed a brilliant few weeks in the 2018/19 Premier League season after making his debut for Southampton in January 2018 against Tottenham Hotspur.

Obafemi slid a well-placed strike from close range past Huddersfield ‘keeper Jonas Losslafter some superb down the right-wing by Nathan Redmond found the promising Irish International.
