John played youths football in Dublin with Lourdes Celtic and Crumlin United before signing with Bohemians and playing with their U20 side.
In February 2009 he moved to Scotland where he spent a season and a half at Hamilton Academical. At the end of the 2009/10 season he returned to Ireland and signed for Pat Scully at Limerick FC in June. He spent the remainder of the 2010 season there making 13 league appearances and scoring two league goals.
In February 2011 John signed for Alan Mathews at Shelbourne and made 6 league appearances as the Reds won promotion from the First Division. John also started in the FAI Cup final as Shels went down to Sligo Rovers after a penalty shootout. But having made just 5 more league appearances the following year John left Shels on 30 July 2012 and signed for Drogheda United. He made his Drogheda debut in a 4-1 defeat to Sligo Rovers on 4 August and his first goal was an injury time winner against bitter Louth rivals Dundalk. He had made 10 league appearances by the end of the 2012 season and then, in January 2013 he moved up the M1 to sign for Dundalk.
John made his Dundalk debut against Shamrock Rovers on the opening night of the 2013 season and made 28 league appearances as the Lilywhites finished second to league champions St Patrick's Athletic. John left the club at the end of the season and re-signed for one of his former clubs, Shelbourne, in January 2014.
John went on to make 10 league appearances over the season, most coming in the last few games, as Shelbourne missed out on automatic promotion from the First Division and were then beaten by Galway FC in the play-offs. In December 2014, John once again returned to a former club, this time signing for Crumlin United.
John then signed for Bray Wanderers in June 2015 and made his debut away to Cork City on 12 June. He finished the season with 18 league appearances and two goals to his name as Bray finished eighth in the Premier Division. John joined Galway United for the 2016 Premier Division campaign where he made 15 league appearances, scoring once in a 3-1 win over St. Pats. But in June of that year he announced that he was leaving Galway due to personal commitments, and on the last day of June John re-signed for Bray Wanderers. John made 14 league appearances in the second half of the season scoring 2 goals. In January 2018, Hugh re-signed for Bray for the 2018 season.
